Gettysburg begins to commemorate Civil War's 150th anniversary

The Toothman family from Grafton, W.Va., considers Gettysburg their “home away from home.”

They visit the area four or five times annually, but this weekend was circled on their calendar for a long time.

The family of four, plus a friend, joined hundreds in observing the official Gettysburg “kickoff” Friday night, for the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War.

“We really feel that the town is our second home,” said Stephanie Toothman, mother of two. “Everyone has been talking about this weekend for months.”

Kickoff events continue through Saturday night, with two scheduled skirmishes — including one on Baltimore Street — a cannonade, and ceremony at the Pa. Memorial.

Eleven-year-old fifth grader Jarrett Toothman was among dozens of students Friday that attended “Meet the Generals,” at Lincoln Square. Re-enactors impersonating General Robert E. Lee,  James Longstreet, Abner Doubleday, George Meade and others greeted students, answered questions and posed for pictures.

“I’m a history fan. There is no better place than Gettysburg,” Jarrett Toothman said of the town, that hosted the Battle of Gettysburg in July of 1863. Toothman likes the Jennie Wade House, because “it shows the civilian side of the battle,” and is looking forward to a 4 p.m “skirmish” on Baltimore Street today, because he has “never seen one before.”

Similarly, Gettysburg resident Lefty Biser is looking forward to the skirmish and other “unique activities” that he calls “once in a lifetime events.”

“When you look at the schedule, there are things that you’ve never seen around here before,” Biser said, citing living history encampments, a Lincoln Square Luminary, Meet the Generals, skirmishes and cannonade as examples.

One of those “once in a lifetime events” is a two-night candle luminary on Lincoln Square. The Gettysburg Garden Club is lighting 150 commemorative candles, beginning at 8 p.m. each night, for two hours. “This has never been done before on Lincoln Square,” said Garden Club President Barbara Brand. Garden Club member Connie Farabaugh added that she thinks “it will be impressive coming in from any direction, especially at night.”

Gettysburg Civil War 150 Planning Committee Chairman Dr. Bradley Hoch estimated that up to 500 Confederate and Union re-enactors are expected to attend events Friday and Saturday.

Telford, Pa. residents Lance and Kathy Cappello were among those re-enactors, although they aren’t new to Gettysburg. In fact, they have a trailer at the Artillery Ridge Campground. Lance impersonates Union General John Buford.  “We love it here. Gettysburg brings out the best in everyone,” he said.
